At the age of 18, his height was measured at 122.55 cm (4 ft 0.25 in), he was considered to be a dwarf by the medical practitioners and was denied entry to the Austrian military when he tried enlisting during World War I. His case was so mysterious that even though a stunted and weak stature it was known that he had abnormally large hands and feet.
One year later, Adam Rainer had grown a full 2 inches and tried enlisting again, but it turned out to be the same old story as the army once again rejected him on the basis of his height, irrespective of his progress.
Miracle started happening at 21 years old, the typical age known that a person stops growing, it was other wise for Rainer and his stature; he began to grow very rapidly in contrast to the 2 inches height attained in the previous two years without any traces of stopping at any certain stage.
Ten years later, he nearly doubled in size; growing (3 ft) sprouting up from over 4 feet tall to over 7 feet tall, and he still never stopped growing.
In 1930, two doctors; Dr. Mandl and Dr. Windholz, started examining Rainer. They found out that Rainer may have developed an extreme case of acromegaly. Overproduction of growth hormone by the pituitary gland. Which leads to excessive, uncontrollable growth, including; enlarged hands, feet, and facial features, such as a protruding jaw, forehead and brow, thickening of the lips and skin; teeth had become widely spaced too and also his spine is increasingly curving sideways. Which make working around and normal life activities difficult for him to be carried out.
Doctors came into Rainer's rescue with an operation to remove the tumor even though it was very risky with a small chance of success, due to the fact that the tumor had been growing for more than a decade. Despite the odds the doctors still found a way to remove the tumor.
Months later after the surgery, Rainer reported for a check up and it was reported that the growth rate was reduced but not fully stopped and his spinal curvature was even worse.
Rainer continued to grow and his health problems only got worse. He began to lose his hearing in his left ear before it was discovered completely deaf and went blind in his right eye. He lost his appetite for food which costs him a lot of energy; the curve in his spine had become so sire, he was barely able to stand or walk, he had to stay in bed for the rest of his life.
Rainer reportedly live out the reminder of his days totally in bed, at a special hospital where he was admitted. Adam’s health got worsen day by day, with doctors trying their best to safe him, he never did stop growing completely.
