Saint Denis carrying his own head

Saint Denis was a 3rd Century Christian Martyr, who had suffered under the persecuted reign of emperor Decius during AD 250.  Some accounts say that during Domitians his persecution was identified and he was also known as the Aeropagite, who was converted by the Apostle. In many accounts it is written that Saint Denis had served the first Bishop of Athens.
A very popular Christian legend says that he was one of the Bishops who were sent to Gaul for the conversik. Of people in the reign of Roman emporer Decius. It is said that the non-Catholic missionaries were really in a shock with the work of Denis and his disciples. Their preachings were so effective that people chose to convert themselves to Catholic following.
When emporer heard about Denis and his fellow clergy, they were imprisoned and tortured for a very long time. They were executed by beheading with a sword on the highest mountain of Paris, which is known as Mount Martre.

Saint Denis and His companions

According to the legend of 'Gregory of Tours' states that Denis the Bishop of Parisii was beheaded and his head was held in his hands as he walked preaching a sermon of repentance. And that's what gave the form to his very famous Cephalophore- depicting his beheaded- head in his hands.
Saint Denis preaching

The statue of Saint Denis is venerated on Catholic Churches as Patron Saint of France and is accounted as Fourteen Holy Helpers. His main church, Saint Denis Basilica was actually a small Chapel which was raised by a local Christian Woman. It was later expanded into an Abbey ad then a Basilica. Around this Basilica grew the French city of Saint Basilica which is now the Suburbs of Paris.

The day of Saint Denis persecution, which is said to be a Feast Day of Paris is celebred on 9th of October every year. It is conducted in the premises of Saint Denis Basilica and people visit from all corners, to pay their visit and respect to the Martyr Bishop of Paris.
